Bethesda Spital opens baby hatch in Basel

Working together with the foundation Swiss Aid for Mother and Child, Bethesda Spital opened a baby hatch on Thursday, 26 November 2015. It is the only one of its kind in the Basel region.

«The baby hatch provides help in extreme emergency situations. It makes it possible for mothers in desperate situations to anonymously place their child in safe hands», explains Dominik Müggler, president of the foundation. Bethesda Spital’s location in the Gellertquartier is ideal for the foundation in many ways. In addition to being geographically advantageous, Bethesda Spital's ultra-modern maternity ward is able to provide top care to the infants. «It is of great importance to us that the babies are lovingly nursed and cared for in the time that they are with us», explains Ute Richter, senior midwife at the maternity ward.
