Another Baby in Berne’s Baby Hatch

Berne, Thursday 11 August 2016. At the Lindenhofspital in Berne, a new-born baby was left in the baby hatch at 11am. The little girl, weighing 3225 grams and 52cm tall, came into the world the previous day after a routine pregnancy. She is healthy, and will for the moment remain for further medical observation in the hospital. It is the third baby to be left in a Lindenhof Group baby hatch and the 18th to be placed in a Swiss baby hatch since 2001.

After receiving the loving care of the nursing staff in the neonatal department of the Lindenhofspital, the Child and Adult Protection Service (KESB) Berne was informed. The KESB has found a set of guardians for the child. A guardian enjoys the same rights as parents. The mother and/or father can register so as to establish or renew contact with the child. Absolute discretion and non-bureaucratic assistance is assured to them. The privacy of the child and parents is strongly protected.

Help for Extreme Emergencies
The baby hatch is a joint project run by the Lindenhof group and Swiss Aid for Mother and Child (SAMC). With the baby window, mothers are offered an anonymous way to ensure their child receives proper medical care. This is intended to prevent the abandonment of children or infanticide, both of which have occurred repeatedly in the past.
To protect everyone involved and with a view to official and professional secrecy, data protection and personal rights, neither the KESB Berne nor the Lindenhof Group or SAMC can provide more information on this particular case.
