Newborn placed in the baby window in the middle of the night
On 25 July 2024, at 1:45 am, another newborn was placed in the baby window at Olten Cantonal Hospital. The little girl had been born shortly before and was completely healthy. For the time being, it is staying in hospital for further medical examinations until it is temporarily placed with foster parents. The Olten-Gösgen child and adult protection authority was informed. All institutions involved in the baby window attach great importance to ensuring that the privacy of the baby and the mother is protected.
This Olten baby is the 30th ever to be placed in a Swiss baby window.
Dominik Müggler, the initiator of the Swiss baby windows, says: "This is a continuation of the trend that more and more babies in Switzerland are being placed in a baby window rather than abandoned or even killed. Consequently, baby windows fulfil their purpose." See also: Swiss foundling statistics: babyfenster.ch/statistics.
Around half of the mothers get in touch after dropping off their baby, partly to enquire how the baby is doing and partly to leave details of the parents' identity. Six out of 30 parents asked for their baby back and then received it again.
Baby windows are a collaboration between three institutions: Swiss Aid for Mother and Child (SHMK), a highly qualified hospital and the local child and adult protection authority. Swiss Aid for Mother and Child offers the mother of the child specific, free material and financial help.
