Davos Hospital

Spital Davos, Promenade 4, 7270 Davos-Platz. The "baby window" facility at Davos is a joint project of Davos Hospital and the Swiss Aid for Mother and Child foundation (SAMC).

What do I do?

Mother arrives at Davos Hospital (fictitious example).
She sees the baby window to the right of the main entrance.
Not recognised by anyone, she hurries to the baby window.
She carefully opens the window and lays the baby inside.
The mother wants to call her child Mia, so she places a letter she has brought along containing kind words next to her baby.
The baby window also contains a letter for the mother. She takes the letter and closes the baby window.
A final glance, everything OK? Hopefully everything will turn out for the best!
As you can see, the baby is alright. The cot is warmed to a temperature of 37 degrees C. Help will soon be at hand.
After three minutes, an alarm sounds in the hospital's delivery ward.
A nurse arrives and picks up baby Mia.
She talks to the baby.
The nurse takes Mia to the new-born babies' room for a check-up.
Here, the baby is cared for. In a few days' time, the baby will be passed into the care of foster parents. The mother has a whole year in which to claim back her child.

Anonymity is guaranteed. The process is neither captured on video, nor will any photos of the baby be published. The letter from the mother to her child is kept under lock and key.

What do I have to keep in mind?

When you use the baby window, your baby will be in good hands. Later in life, the child might want to know more about its father and mother. Why not write your child a personal letter? Describe the circumstances which prompted you to give up your child. Send your child on its way with a gesture of love. Place the letter alongside the child in the baby window. Please remember: even at this stage, you are more than welcome to contact the Swiss Aid for Mother and Child foundation (Tel. 0800 811 100, calls are free) to arrange a confidential meeting at which you will be given all the help and advice you need on life together with your child. Please get in touch. We will provide you with help; confidentially and in complete anonymity. Remember to look after yourself, as well. Giving birth without medical assistance places you at risk. Why not consult a qualified doctor? If you need to consult a doctor free of charge, please get in touch with the Swiss Aid for Mother and Child foundation. They will provide you with all the help you need.
